A Timeline of I-73

Adam Benson (WBTW)

Over its nearly 40-year history, the planned construction of Interstate 73 has taken on near mythical status — spanning seven presidential administrations, countless studies, and passionate arguments on both sides.

If it ever gets built, the roughly 80-mile, $2 billion highway would be South Carolina’s sixth interstate, linking the state’s tourism hub directly to the North Carolina border through rural areas of the Pee Dee, running from Rockingham, North Carolina through Marlboro and Dillon counties.

It would then cross Interstate 95 and feed onto Highway 22 in Horry County.

Innovation leads to transformation

The pace at which shifts in innovation are transforming businesses, and the world, is unprecedented. Between the exponential growth of data (doubling every two to three years), cheapening computing power, and the rise of a connected world (e.g., IoT (internet of things), mobile devices, social media), BofA Global Research believes that the fastest transformation in human history is ahead of us.

What’s more, the commercialization of new technologies and breakthroughs will happen much faster than ever before and as a result, society is preparing for what is coming next, today.

The MBREDC Industry Awareness Class

Our March class began in the Ascott Valley Industrial Park at Skutchi Designs, specializing in creating customized office furniture and cubicles.

Also in Ascott Valley, we visited Homewood Metalworks new facility, a family-owned business, that manufactures metal buildings, roofs, and all accessories.

Lewis Truck Lines is a family-owned trucking company that has been in business since 1935. They focus on meeting customer’s needs by transporting the goods safely to desired destinations in 48 states.

Next up was a tour of the Academy for Technology and Academics where students are being prepared for the future through a variety of majors, including Culinary Arts, who prepared a delicious meal for us.

We rounded out the day at PTR, a firearms manufacturer located in the Cool Springs Industrial Park, and Zephyr International who design, develop and manufacture products and services that enhance the safety of helicopter rescue hoist teams. What a day!

Visit the websites of these local industries to learn more about what is being made in Horry County and the jobs they offer.

Thank you to each of these businesses for welcoming our class.

If you are interested in being part of the next Industry Awareness Class that will begin in September 2024, contact Sandra James for more information. Applications will be accepted beginning in June 2024.
